Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Wish you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all readers. May God bring joy, peace and comfort through this coming Christmas season. Christmas has been celebrated by many just for economic gains, just spend time with friends, just enjoying in worldly pleasure, shoping, etc. How about you? How do you prepare to spend this coming Christmas? I am sure God wants to bless you but the only thing is you need to seek the will of God.

For me as I am planning to spend Christmas with family after two years, my prayer is that I may bring peace, joy and comfort to my family and church members through sharing the word of God, through prayers, through giving, and just by my presence. I want to bless others even as God has been giving me manifold blessings. I want to be channel of blessings to many. I want to share God's love, God's giving of His only Son. Through that the world may have peace, joy and comfort.

Neglected Christians

I happened to talk with one the elders of Chin Christian Fellowship in Kuala Lumpur. He mentioned that people are ashamed to invite pastors when they don’t have money to offer. Giving offerings to the pastors have been turned into a kind of custom. The pastors also expect to get some thing when invited. So what happen to the poor who don’t have money to give offerings? Are they forgotten? Are they neglected? How do they conduct their marriages? How about in their sicknesses and in their troubles? The questions remain unanswered.

I have been visiting un-church Christians for two years and have been seeing the plight of people. I really have a heart to help these people. There are some who don’t have just rice to eat. Sleeping, eating, bathing places are horrible. Their rooms are over crowded. Some of them have to work even on Sunday and have no time to go to the church. Some of them are cheated by the employers. Because of these situations their spiritual lives have been withered. They have no mood to read the Bible and go to the churches. Where are the Christians claiming to be light and salt to the earth? They just need some one beside them in their difficulties, hardships, bereavements, and so on…..

My Tears come as I shared God's love

Malaysia National Evangelical Christian Fellowship (NECF) plans to share God's love by showing video to friends this coming Christmas. They call this evangelism "hope celebration Malaysia". My wife and I thought it is good for us as well to show the video to some of our friends and share the love of God and the hope that we have in Christ.
We screened at one of my friends house and after which followed by my testimony of encountering Christ and I also shared about the love of God. As I shared my testimony and how much God loves me, my tears come down. I find hard to hold back my tears in order that I might continue sharing God's love. I strongly believe the tears I shed is precious to God.
"God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us". He died for us that we might have life. My Myanmar friends in Malaysia is in need to know the love of God. As I am here, my prayer is that I might bring some to Christ. Pray that they may know Christ. Until and unless we invite Christ in our lives, we can't say Immanuel- God with us and Christmas has no meaning to us.

Second Thoughts on Myanmar's Bible Colleges

What on earth God is doing in Myanmar? Has He been silent? I would say “NO,” for God has been actively working in Myanmar and marvelously blessing churches and Christian organizations in our land. Churches and Christian organizations such as Bible Colleges have reached out to people in various ways, and many have come to Jesus and have been blessed with a better life. But this has given rise to unhealthy competition among Bible Colleges for students. Why are people studying in Bible Colleges in the first place? What is the role of the Church in relation to Bible Colleges? A second thought on this situation is needed.Yangon has more than one hundred Bible Colleges/Seminaries or Bible training centers while more may be found in other parts of Myanmar. Once Rev. Peter Joseph the secretary of the Association for Theological Education in Myanmar (ATEM) said, “Bible Colleges and Christian Orphanages are mushrooming.”(Chiansachaung neh mibameh gayha hmupoh talu poh re). Under the ATEM umbrella alone there are 27 schools with about 4,000 students who are enrolled in theological colleges run by mainstream Protestant churches (2006). I roughly estimate that Myanmar has between 8,000 and 10,000 Bible School students, and about 2000-3000 of them graduate every year. Apart from this, thousands of students are studying overseas. If we look back ten years this means about 20,000-30,000 students would have graduated to-date. But where are all these graduates gone?Bible Colleges compete in various ways, which is commendable. But when they compete for more students, questions are raised about the way it is done. They may say, “We have more students than the other colleges. Our college is the biggest, our facilities are better and this year we have this number of graduating students, etc.” Moreover in competing to sponsor more students to their own colleges, they make claims such as, “Come to our college, we will find you a sponsor,” or “If you join our church we will also employ you as a fulltime worker upon completion of your course.”As a result when a student is unable to finish his course in one particular college due to academic reasons or violation of rules, another college happily accepts him. The increase of enrolment or the numbers graduating may be good but mostly the quality of the students is compromised academically and spiritually. This leads churches to complain and put the blame on Bible Colleges and their lecturers. They say, “What kind of students are you producing? What did you teach in the Bible College?” Therefore Bible Colleges should be more concerned with quality and not quantity. They should compete to produce quality students instead of seeking increase in numbers alone. Unfortunately, many people go to a Bible College for the wrong reasons. For instance, instead of disciplining their own children, parents send them to a Bible College in the hope that their children will become better persons. Then there are parents who cannot afford an education in conventional secular schools for their children. Due to the ongoing economic crisis in Myanmar, these parents have little choice but to look to Bible Colleges for sponsorships. They also believe theological colleges will teach their children English and enable them to cope with modern life. The failure of Myanmar’s education system has resulted in many parents believing that theological college graduates are “better educated” than their counterparts in government-run secular colleges. On the other hand, there are those who fail their matriculation examinations and cannot further their education. As a last resort their parents send them to a Bible College. There is no doubt that many come to Bible College because they really want to dedicate their lives to God and serve Him, but their number is few. When these students complete their courses they are sent to various churches. In fact a Bible College is one of the ministries of the Church. If there are complaints, churches should therefore also examine themselves and their relationship with Bible Colleges and students to see if there are shortcomings. What then are the roles the Church in Myanmar should play in relation to Bible Colleges and students? 1. Churches are responsible to send only those who are willing to serve God in full time ministry, and those who qualify as pastors and fulltime workers. The sending church should then support these students. 2. Churches are to provide on-the-job training. Bible Colleges emphasize mainly theory, and a little practical. The church is the real field for practical training.3. Churches should work closely with Bible Colleges to support and train students instead of depending on foreigners for support.4. Churches should explore ways to upgrade the academic quality of Bible Colleges and their facilities.5. Most importantly, churches are to pray for Bible Colleges and their students.I truly believe there are some benefits in the rising number of Bible Colleges and students in Myanmar. Although there are shortcomings and unhealthy competition, many good students are still being sent and supported by responsible churches. Nevertheless, let us think again: What are Bible Colleges for? Who is studying in our Bible Colleges? Is there enough support for Bible Schools? Why depend on foreigners for support? In other countries various churches come in unity to support a Bible College, but it seems this is not so in Myanmar. As much as we are thankful for our many blessings, let’s give the state of Myanmar’s Bible Colleges a second thought.

Ral Pel EFC Golden Jubilee

My mother church Ral Pel Evangelical Free Church is going to celebrate it's 50th Aniversary in the coming Dec 27-29, 2007. What a privillege to be able to celebrate 50th Anniversary. Praise God.
It was my grand father Mr. Mangzela who found the church. My grand father who is still alive preached salvation by grace alone not of the good things we do, and emphasized praising God in singing (Lenkhawm zai). Because of these two issues the American Baptist Mission council in Chin state decided as follows:
1. Those who sing Lenkhawm zai are out of our church.
2. Those who play drum (Khuang) are out of our church.
3. Those who wear shawl (Mizo puanfen) are out of our church.
4. Those who use Mizo language in worship service are out of our church.
These are the basic reasons that my grand father had to start another church not knowing any thing to do. Most of the church members follow my grand father decision and from there there is no Baptist church in my village until 1995.
I am proud of having such a grand father who stood firm for his faith in spite of much criticisms. The church had to stand alone, depending on God alone because more than 90 percent of the christians are Baptists during those days. But he stood for his faith and trusted God for his guidance. And by the grace of God he found a denomination ( Evangelical Free Church of Myanmar) to join.
Praise God that the church could produce several full time ministers such as pastors, missionaries, and lecturers. I am sure that it is by the grace and guidance of God. Ral Pel EFC has been a mighty instrument in the hands of God.
I am proud and give thank to God that my father is right now the chairman of the church since they don't have a pastor. I am thankful to God that he chose me to serve him in full time. I served as a pastor in Myanmar for six years and now studying God's word in Malaysia.

Thank God for how He enabled my grand father to start a new church, how he blessed the church in producing full time workers in God's vineyard, how he guided the church. Especially how he guided our family. God has been helping us until this day. 'EBENEZER'.

Joy and Sorrow Mixed

As we plan to go back for Christmas. As we look forward to seeing our family and friends our joy and sorrow mixed because atleast four of our close relatives and friends are no more. They passed this world of trials and went to be with the Lord. I am sure they peacefully live with the Lord. But we human beings are here weeping for them.

Anyway it is our prayer that our presence with the remaining family will bring comfort, joy and blessings. The Lord has been good to my wife and me in our bereavement. Especially my wife knows how to take strength in the Lord. Even I wonder how she could go through all the bereavements. She instead comforts me from Philippians saying "Rejoice in the Lord always". She always says God is with us and helping us in our struggles. I really appreciate her prayer life. That give us joy.

We give thanks to God for providing us the airfare for going back to our family. We rejoice in the Lord, but at the same time even as we are in this world of trails we sorrow for the loved one who passed away in our absence. When we go the family will weep again but I pray that God will use us to bring comfort and joy to our family and friends.

My Reflection on the past Semester (2nd Sem, 2007)

For some of the people it may be very simple but for me it is a very big issue. There was a time in the semester, my spirit had no rest. I could not enjoy the whole two days. I did not want to share my deep feeling to any one. I bear within me. Even to pray was difficult. I tried to read the Bible, I could not get spiritual meaning. I prayed to God, and as I begin to study I just turn the Bible and it comes to James.

James 1: 2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7Those who doubt should not think they will receive anything from the Lord; 8 they are double-minded and unstable in all they do.

I count my spiritual dryness as a testing of my faith, a testing of my calling, a testing of my perseverance, a testin gof my commitment etc. Then I could pray as follows giving thanks to him and renew my commitment.

Lord thank you! You have been my guide; you have been helping me until this day. Please help me to accomplish the task that is set before me. My people are eagerly waiting for me to go home with success. May you help me please LORD!

Myanmar Government Vs. Roman Imperial in Paul's Day

U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) joined First Lady Laura Bush in decrying human rights violations in Burma, describing it as "a land where 3,000 villages have been destroyed, 6,000 political prisoners are in jail, 70,000 child soldiers have been forcibly recruited, and over 500,000 people are internally displaced." U.S. Ambassador Jackie W. Sanders said Burmese military forces systematically rape women and girls, especially those of the Shan, Karen, Karenni, Chin and other ethnic minorities. An estimated 90 percent of Burmese people live below or near the poverty level, subsisting on a dollar per day or less, Charles Petrie, the United Nations humanitarian chief in Burma told the Associated Press in August, 2007.
Roman imperial conquests and economic exploitation had in fact devastated villages and fields, deforested mountains, and eroded the natural environment in general. The stability imposed by the Roman imperial order surely meant insecurity for many if not most urban people. Most of the cities Galatia, Philippi, and Thessalonica among which Paul carried out his mission were would likely have experienced local disruption Paul addresses the world as “groaning and travailing” as it awaited its liberation, along with that of “the sons of God”, from the futility which it had been subjected by implication by arrogant and sinful imperial practices (Romans 8:19-23). Robert Jawett takes this as anti-imperialism.
How about for Myanmar Christians? What should be the role of Christians in Myanmar? Is there any possible way to involve in politics for Christians? Where are the Christians in Myanmar whereas the Buddhist monks are actively involving?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

Whenever people invite me to celebrate their birthday and pray for them, I used to read from Lamentation 3:19-23 where the mighty prophet says, “I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. 20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. 21Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope 22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness”.
Now is my turn, TODAY (30th, August) IS MY BIRTHDAY.
It is indeed a joy for me to celebrate my birthday. God has been faithful to me all these years. Even though I walked through many difficult journeys, He is ever present in all my hardships. Highlighting my journey of this year in studying Master Course in Seminary Theology Malaysia, often tears come to my cheek. My soul is downcast within me. In my weakness and in frustration in my papers, I blamed my self; I blame the God who brought me to Malaysia to study. But the day comes; I realized that all these tears/ hardships are designed to mold me for the future ministry. Oh! Yea, God has been faithful unto me, God has been gracious unto me, God has been blessing me, and God has been showing mercy upon mercy unto me.
I Praise God for His manifold blessings until this day to enable me to celebrate my BIRHTDAY,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

My Prayer life Renewal

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed (Mark 1: 35)

My wife and I decided to dedicate Friday evening for prayer and devotion besides our daily prayer. But we did not last long because of assignments pressure. We said we have many assignments to do and to read, so we have been spending times in reading and doing our assignments. As I do assignments I am frustrated with it, even if I read Bible I could not get spiritual life nourished. I was inwardly unrest.
A preacher by the name Alvin Ung really touched my heart by his message to commit my self to spend more time in prayer. The preacher challenged me to spend time even though I may be struggling to do many things (assignments). “The more we have things to do the more we are to pray”. Jesus also had many things to do, many people looked for him. But he went to the mountain side and prayed. Even Jesus being the Son of God spends time in prayers. If Jesus thinks He needs to spend time in prayer, how much more we need to spend time in prayer. Spend time with God and He will spend time with us. My spiritual life is renewed. AMEN.

What If I can't help my own parents???

My wife and I are studying in Seminary. We do have sponsor from the church. We never cease praising God for His provision for our studies.

But we are really struggling and are heavy burdened, because both of our parents are not in good health. They are very poor. To get their daily bread is quite difficult for them. They do need to pray "Lord give us our daily bread". They are quite old. They know we are studying and have no income. But they still expect some help from us. Whenever we call home, they tell us all their ill-health, difficulties, needs of daily food etc. We cannot help them. But we know that it is our responsibilities to care our own parents since they cannot work. We are burdened and struggled for our parents. We could do nothing for our parents except prayers.

The question came to me: if you can’t help/care your own parents (immediate family) what is the use of your ministry? What is your preaching of giving, helping the poor? What about your studies? How to balance ministry and family? How does the Bible teach about that???

Why Spiritual Dryness in Seminary?

This is one of the big issues in Seminary life. Many students committedly and enthusiastically go to Bible Colleges/ Seminaries. I really wonder when I hear their testimonies of their Spiritual dryness. What should be the reasons???

Is it because the lecturers themselves are too dry in their preaching in the chapel? teaching in the classes? Is it because there is no Spiritual lessons in the curriculum? or is it because of too many assignments and exams? No, one lecturer says louldy, it is because the students are lazy. Wa !! is it so???

Yes to some extent. As far as my observation is concerned, many students are just studying for the sake of grades, to pass the exams. They don't have time for reading the Bible. Sometimes assignments and exams press so hard until the students cannot take breath. Even if he/she reads she can't find spiritual food. The student just looks for points to teach others, to write his papers etc... Reading the Bible and meditation required a lot of time, and quite place. But in seminary many cannot give time as well as cannot find such place. Some students say, there are a lot of activities besides classes and assignments. They just can't find time for their personal devotion.
Academic excellency is being looked and well appreciated in the Seminary. Preachings, presentations etc. are done in academicly. There seems to be no spiritual food to eat.

So how to solve spiritual dryness? It can be solved by having personal devotion to God. If the Bible School students and pastors/ Lecturers have no time to read the Bible, then who will have time to read the Bible???

My first time to conduct Funeral Service

Many of my Chin people are working in Malaysia. They have been facing alot of problems. I usually compare life in Malaysia as Israel's life in Egypt. My people suffer a lot.

Two men by the name Laithantluanga (Tluanga) Age 29 and Hmingthanngura (Ngura) age 22 left this world of trial as they entered into the well. The well is about 15ft deep and about 2ft of water. Ngura went in first and could not come up. Tluanga went in to help Ngura but could not help and both died because of lack of Oxegen.

Since there is no senior pastor to conduct the Funeral service for them, I have to do the service. Wa! my first experience. By God's grace and help I could do well.
I preached from Ps.39:4-7
4 “Show me, LORD, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is.
5You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure.
6 “Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom;in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth without knowing whose it will finally be.
7 “But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.

God brought us together

The Lord has been so good for my wife and me in bringing us once again after one year. It was such a terrible expirience to be a way from my wife. But the Lord has brought my wife to me. We have been enjoying and counting the blessings of God. We cannot stop giving thanks to God for His providence to study in Malaysia. His guidance and love. His faithfulness endures for ever.

let the people say AMEN
